There are several reasons why someone may choose to move to Sweden. It could be because of work or because you fancy something new and want to start afresh in a new country.

Moving to a new country involves many considerations, and you will want to make sure that you have made the right choice of where to live.

To help you make the right choice for you and your family (if you are moving with them), we have put together some of the things that you will want to know about life in Sweden.

We have summarised the pros and cons, all to help you decide whether it is the right place for you to live.

Pro- Sustainable transport in the city areas

One of the main priorities for those living in Sweden is to care for the world around them. This means they think about how to protect the environment, particularly in key areas such as transport in built-up city areas.

Trams, trains, and buses are the main options for getting around. These reduce the need for cars and, in turn, the carbon footprint in city areas.

Con- The weather is not always the best

Cold, snowy winter in Sweden

Whilst there are some moments of sunshine and warmth in Sweden, this does not happen regularly, which means that if you are looking to live in a year-round hotspot, this is not the place for you.

Sweden's winters can be dark and rainy, which is not for everyone. Be aware that you may just need to get used to this type of weather

Pro- There is a great/work-life balance

Many of the businesses in Sweden are dedicated to ensuring that their employees achieve a high level of work/life balance.

They see the importance of those who work for them being able to bring the very best version of themselves into each day. This means that those who are working are able to enjoy generous holiday allowances and 40-hour weeks without the need to do lots of overtime.

Con- You will need to speak the language

Whilst many people who live in Sweden are taught (and therefore are able to use) English, this is not something that they will tend to do.

Swedish is the spoken language and if you want to get by in your new home and give yourself the best chance to work and socialise, you will need to learn Swedish. The good news is that it is relatively easy to learn, even though it appears complicated.

Pro- An active life is the norm

With such beautiful natural places to explore, it comes as no surprise that an active life is the norm in Sweden. There are lots of different places to explore which will give you the opportunity to breathe in plenty of fresh air.

This includes hiking, ice hockey and sailing too, anything that is going to take your fancy and help you to explore the very best of what Sweden has to offer.

Con- There are controls on alcohol

In Sweden, there are some pretty strict rules around drinking alcohol, this all comes from a certain level of alcoholism that was seen back in the 1950s.

This means that there are limits in the places where you can buy drinks that contain more than 3.5% alcohol.

Pro- Excellent healthcare

Another thing that Sweden is incredibly dedicated to, is providing a high-quality healthcare service. Not only is the healthcare service in Sweden known for being fantastic, they also mostly funded by taxes.

This means that for the most part the treatment that you are going to need, when you need it, is free and easy enough to access. Both things are a plus point.

Con- It can be expensive

Compared to other European countries you can choose to live in, Sweden can be seen as relatively expensive. That said, the cost of living in Sweden can vary depending on where you choose to live.

That said, living in Stockholm is probably comparable to living in London and some of the other main cities in the UK, therefore if you already live in a city, then the jump in costs may not seem massive.

Pro-Sweden is safe to live.

If you are someone who wants to feel safe where they live, then the good news for you is that Sweden is seen to be one of the safest countries in Europe to live in. There is not only a low crime rate, but if something were to happen then efficient law enforcement would be on hand.

Sweden also has a robust social welfare system, which also helps to ensure that there is a peaceful and stable feel to the environment there.

Con- it can be lonely

It is important to state that anywhere that you choose to live away from the UK is likely to leave you feeling a little bit lonely and Sweden is no different.

However, it is important to know that no matter where you call home, if you look hard enough you are likely to find someone to spend time with, which will help you to not feel quite so lonely.
