Top Things to See and Do When You Move to France

Planning on a big move to France from the UK? If you are then there is a good chance that you are going to spend plenty of time getting used to your new home. However, as well as learning to love life in France, there are lots of great things that you can see and do too.

To help you to make sure that you see the very best that France has to offer and to inspire your next adventure; we have put together our top things to see and do when you move to France.

1. Take the chance to remember the Normandy D-Day Beaches

A Normandy D-Day Beach

If you have an interest in history, or even if you don’t; then you may want to head to the Normandy D-Day Beaches. These beaches are incredibly important in the story of World War 2 as on the 6th of June 1944, the Allies began to liberate France from being under Nazi control.

Rather unsurprisingly, as well as the beaches, you can plan to see a variety of memories and war cemeteries in the area, which are a sombre reminder of just how much was lost in the war.

2. Head North to Mont Saint-Michel

If you are living in the North of France, or you fancy a road trip somewhere out of your new area, then one of the best places to visit in Northern France has to be Mont Saint-Michel. Recognised as being one of the wonders of the Western world, this is a Benedictine Abbey that is set on a rocky island where Normandy and Brittany border one another.

Much like a similar location in the UK, you can only access the Abbey for a certain period during the day when the tide is low, so make sure if you do plan to head to this picture-perfect location, that you time your visit well.

3. Wonder at the Eiffel Tower

Now, we know that Paris and the Eiffel Tower in particular are definitely geared more towards tourists rather than those who call France their home. But that doesn’t mean that it is not worth a visit.

The Eiffel Tower is an absolutely fascinating feat of engineering and gives you a wonderful viewpoint of the entire city (if you don’t mind facing that climb of course). We highly recommend that you plan your visit later on in the day as an Eiffel Tower sunset is hard to beat!

4. Soak up some culture at the Louvre Museum

Whilst you are in Paris it makes sense that you make the most of all the time that you have in the city. Another great tourist attraction is the Louvre.

Not only is the building itself iconic (and completely photo-worthy of course) but the sheer volume of incredible art and culture that can be found within its walls is astounding.

Some of the most famous pieces of art can be found in the Louvre, which makes it definitely worth the visit.

5. Gaze over the Cliffs of Etretat

Moving away from the world of art and into a place of natural outstanding beauty. The Cliffs of Etretat are incredible and something that photos simply do not do justice to. These chalk cliffs are so beautiful that they were the inspiration for some of the works of Monet.

As well as giving you the best view that you are likely to see, here you will also be able to carefully explore a variety of rock formations and sea pools.

6. Experience nature at the Bay of Somme

Carrying on the nature theme, we have something still water-related but that is definitely calmer. The Bay of Somme is an estuary and is the largest one in Northern France. Here you will find a collection of dunes, marshes and salt meadows.

As well as this; the Bay of Somme is home to over 250 different species of birds and brings in a variety of birdwatches every single year. Those who prefer their creatures with skin rather than feathers will be pleased to know that there is also the largest colony of French seals, which you may often see lying around on the sandbanks.

7. Feel the gothic vibe with Grandes Cathedrals

If you love everything Gothic, then you are going to want to book in to go to Picardy in Haus-de-France. This historic region is famous for its Gothic cathedrals and in fact, it has the most examples of this per square metre, than any other place in the world.

8. See what inspired Monet

If you want to feel like an artist, then one of the best places to head to is Monet’s Garden. Found in Giverny, as soon as you walk around the house, garden and workshop you will notice some of the locations of his most prized pieces of artwork.

This includes the Water Lily Pond, which the Water Lilly painting was inspired by.

9. Explore the Loire Valley on 2 wheels

For those people who are seeking something active, the Loire Valley may just give you exactly what you are searching for. This is particularly true if you are able to buy, rent or use your own bike to get around. However, it is worth noting that trying to complete the entire route is not for the faint of heart.

The Loire Valley is home to a completely unique 800km cycle route that will allow you to take the route of a wild river, as well as sampling good wines and medieval towns on the way. Let’s face it, what is not to love about that?
